John 13:1-17

May 12, 2013

Intro: many of us are blessed to have moms, grandmas, aunts and wives that have servant hearts

-mothering is important work (it’s a calling from God), but its work that rarely gets a woman a lot of notice or attention (therefore, a mother needs a servant heart)

–to be a mother you need a servant heart, but God also wants all of us to have servant hearts which is why we’ll study John 13:1-17

1. Why did Jesus wash feet? (v.3-5)

-He was sovereign and divine and yet He washed feet

-a disciple might wash a teacher’s feet, but why would a teacher wash a disciple’s feet? –LOVE

-like Jesus, we need to get rid of our pride and love

-if cultural rules are preventing us from loving others we need to ignore cultural rules

2. Why did Peter refuse to have his feet washed? (v.6-8)

-when Jesus washed feet he was teaching about love and EQUALITY

-Jesus wanted to eliminate the class division where some people are more important than others

Luke 22 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.

-Jesus isn’t saying we shouldn’t have leaders or people in charge, He is saying that no one is more important than others and everyone serves

-Peter refused to have his feet washed because he couldn’t imagine life without class division

3. What is Jesus initiating here? (v.13-15)

-is Jesus initiating a religious ritual (footwashing), or is He starting something more?

-probably He is initiating a religious ritual AND He is definitely in the process of bringing in a Kingdom where everyone serves

4. What must I do to be blessed? (v.17)

-a servant hearted person

-loves

-shows humility

-treats everyone with love and respect

-a servant hearted person will be blessed on earth and blessed greatly in heaven
