The Sovereignty of God
Isaiah 44:24- 45:13
“The Sovereignty of God is the biblical teaching that all things are under God’s rule and control, and that nothing happens without His direction or permission.” http://www.theopedia.com/Sovereignty_of_God (accessed 09-04-13)
Examples of God’s Sovereignty- Jesus calming the storm (Mark 4) and Satan needing God’s permission to mistreat Job (Job 1)
A. Historical Context
1. Jerusalem to Be Inhabited
Isaiah prophesied that Judah would be invaded and would live in exile as punishment for their sins. AND he prophesied that Judah would repent, and God would restore them and bring them back to Jerusalem.
2. Cyrus the Great
Restoration would happen because of Cyrus the Great, a Persian ruler. He would be filled with righteousness and allow the people of Judah to return to Jerusalem.
B. God’s Sovereignty
1. God is Sovereign over History
a. God directs human history
Isaiah 45:1-4- God gave Cyrus success so the people of Judah would be restored
b. God permits human history to happen
Job 1- Even Satan needed God’s permission to do evil in this world.
Some Christians say otherwise, but I believe that evil things are permitted by God, not caused by God.
2. God is Sovereign over People
God has the right to be sovereign over us.
In reality His sovereignty is limited because we rebel against it.
3. God is Sovereign over nature
Isaiah 44:24,27 and 45:12
The Bible is full of examples that prove God is sovereign over nature.
If God is sovereign, why do illnesses and natural disasters happen?
Illnesses and natural disasters are a result of the fall. (Romans 8:20-22)
4. God is Sovereign over all spirits.
Luke 10:17 “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
If God is sovereign over spirits, why are demons in the world deceiving people?
Free, deceiving demons are a result of the fall.
C. God’s Sovereignty and Our Sin
Our sin and our sin-tainted world seem to limit God’s sovereignty
In the new heaven and the new earth God’s Sovereignty will not be limited by sin!
John 12:31 “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.”
John 14:30 “I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me,”
